Psychics, Mediums, and Intuitives – Oh My!

Psychics. Mediums. Psychic mediums. Intuitives. Tarot/Angel/Oracle card readers. When getting a “psychic” reading, it can be confusing trying to understand the different types of people and the services they offer. So what are the differences?

There are exceptions, but I will attempt to break down the basics…

Psychics

Generally, this is an umbrella category that encompasses all the others. Anyone who provides readings or sessions to others using intuitive abilities or tools generally falls into this category. They should be able to provide some type of insight, guidance, details, or validations about someone’s life, relationships, career, or other areas of interest using intuitive abilities or tools that are beyond those available using the five senses.

Some psychics may use physical tools such as Tarot cards or crystal balls. Others may forego physical tools altogether and use only innate abilities such as clairvoyance (seeing visions), clairaudience (hearing sounds), clairsentience (sensing or feeling) or the ability to communicate with souls who have departed the physical world (mediumship). These abilities are sometimes called ESP, or extra-sensory perception.

The important thing to remember about psychics is that each of the subcategories described here is a psychic, but the reverse is not necessarily true. For example, all mediums are psychics, but not all psychics are mediums.

Mediums

In short, mediums talk to dead people. They have the ability to connect with the spirit world and bring forth messages from departed loved loves connected to the person requesting the reading, or to those who are very close to them. Some will see the departed loved ones almost as if they are physically present. Others will see images in their mind’s eye (clairvoyance).

Psychic Mediums

This is just another description for a medium since all mediums are, by nature, psychics. However, some mediums prefer this title to show that they also provide other services besides receiving messages from souls on the other side.

Intuitives

This is a modern term that is an alternative to the word “psychic”. Some people find the term psychic distasteful due to overuse, or believe the word has negative connotations from fraudulent psychic hotlines or other negative stereotypes. Some prefer the term intuitive to avoid these associations.

Medical Intuitives

These practitioners use their intuitive abilities to help discern and detect medical issues in people. While they are not medical doctors, they can use their abilities to scan the body and detect areas of concern. They can help diagnose symptoms and suggest courses of action to facilitate healing or to investigate with your doctor.

Tarot / Oracle / Angel Card Readers

These are people who use cards as a tool to assist with their psychic readings. For some, this is the only type of intuitive guidance they provide and they do not get messages from extra-sensory perception. For others, the cards are just a tool used alongside other intuitive abilities like clairvoyance or mediumship.

Choose Wisely

Whatever type of psychic guidance you seek, referrals are the best way to choose one. Nothing beats a recommendation from a trusted friend. Online reviews and testimonials can also help.

Remember that reputable psychics will be able to provide you information that resonates with you and just feels right. Never trust a psychic who frightens you, tells you that you are cursed, or any other method that attempts to coerce you into buying anything else from them – including more readings!

When all else fails, trust your own intuition about the type of reader that is right for you.

With Deepest Gratitude,
